So hopefully, that's going to decrease the expenses as far as an ambulance and an emergency department expenses and having patients go into those alternate care locations," said Oneida County EMS coordinator James Monahan. “We anticipate to see a decrease in patients having to go to the emergency department. The hope is that the county will actually save money by, in part, cutting back on ER visits paid for by Medicaid. The county will foot the bill for a ride. The navigator, based in Texas, can provide advice and refer callers for any additional medical care, which may mean needing to set up a tele-health meeting or ride to a local clinic. Oneida County staff said 911 calls with non-emergency injuries or illnesses may be transferred to a urnse navigator.The Nurse Navigation Program diverts non-emergency calls to licensed nurses.
A new program is underway in Oneida County.I would like to thank the staff here at the Emergency Services Department as well as those from American Medical Response and the County Executive for all of their work to bring this program to Oneida County. This program will help divert individuals seeking assistance to the most appropriate service while allowing the EMS and hospital personnel to remain available to tend to the most serious issues. Hospital space as well as ambulance availability was strained and pushed to the limits resulting in diversions and long waits by EMS personnel. “The planning process for this project intensified partially as a result of what was observed during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, along with the ongoing efforts to address the needs of EMS services in the county.
“This project is the culmination of the continuous planning process conducted by Emergency Services in an attempt to increase the efficiency of the services we provide to the community,” said, Oneida County Director of Emergency Services Edward Stevens said in a statement. The Nurse Navigation service does not require callers to have medical insurance for access to the Nurse Navigation program. An ambulance will still be dispatched in urgent or life-threatening emergencies. Oneida County residents should see no change when calling 911 for life-threatening emergencies. Nurses can also arrange ride-sharing services to assist any callers without transportation. With the new system - administered by Texas-based business Global Medical Response - dispatchers will assess callers’ situations and navigate them to the appropriate service.
